Current Project 2026 - 68 Arran Street East
Dublin Civic Trust's latest building conservation project has begun at 68 Arran Street East, located to the rear of 18 Ormond Quay Upper.
This modest building represents the very essence of Dublin's streetscape heritage and its merchant trading tradition, constructed in the 1760s during the city's notable period of Georgian expansion.
During 2022-24 we completed restoration of the building's street facade and shopfront, representing the second phase of the full-scale refurbishment of this distinctive, quayside urban block in the heart of Dublin.
The third phase now underway will transform this 1760s building into a permanent home for Dublin Civic Trust. Previously, the Trust has moved nomadically in tandem with its revolving fund projects, but given the upheaval and complexity involved, we are embarking on a project for a permanent base from which to operate. 68 Arran Street East, with its intriguing and beautiful mix of 18th, 19th and early-20th century layers is an ideal and modest home for the Trust, doubling-up as a showcase of the city's multi-faceted, layered development.

68 Arran Street East will establish a key conservation benchmark in the centre of Dublin, prominently sited just off the historic Liffey quays. The Trust's office presence is intended to restore life to the building's quirky, semi-commercial ground floor, which will contrast with the intimate atmosphere of its upper floors - rich in texture and historic character, redolent of the domestic rooms that filled the countless terraced streets of the 18th and 19th-century city. It is intended that the Trust's premises will be open for public access on specified days, and during cultural events and festivals.
Number 68's restoration will dynamically educate and engage the public with Dublin's built fabric, and engender a new appreciation for our collective architectural inheritance. It is vital that key examples of Dublin's historic buildings are showcased and conserved as part of the city's wider cultural offering. The many lives and layers of 68 Arran Street East will add considerably to the distinction of Dublin as a cultural capital and to its architectural patrimony.
