This three-hour webinar provides a detailed overview of traditional stone masonry in Ireland, from its source at quarry, to specification for its use in building conservation and new work. Led by leading stone cutters and masonry specialists, O’Flaherty Stone of Co. Wicklow and INStone of Co. Clare, expert speakers guide attendees through the sources of Irish granite and limestone and the tradition that binds the craft and trade of stone masonry in Ireland. Eoin Madigan of Madigan Traditional Masonry also provides vital insights into air lime mixes and local aggregates.
Case studies both large and small, and project analysis from around the country, provide insights into native stone specification, in-situ stone repairs, conservation and restoration practices, and the essential principles and logistics of stone extraction and working. Featured projects include St. Mel’s Cathedral, Longford; Four Courts capitals, Dublin; St. John’s Cathedral, Limerick; O’Connell Monument, Ennis. As skilled educators and trainers, the speakers also explore sustaining the tradition in Ireland by developing knowledge at specification stage, to ensuring apprenticeships and training are advanced at local and national levels.
